Review - Unbreak My Heart by Melissa Walker

Unbreak My Heart by Melissa Walker
May 22nd, 2012 from Bloomsbury

Sophomore year broke Clementine Williams’ heart. She fell for her best friend’s boyfriend and long story short: he’s excused, but Clem is vilified and she heads into summer with zero social life.

Enter her parents’ plan to spend the summer on their sailboat. Normally the idea of being stuck on a tiny boat with her parents and little sister would make Clem break out in hives, but floating away sounds pretty good right now.

Then she meets James at one of their first stops along the river. He and his dad are sailing for the summer and he’s just the distraction Clem needs. Can he break down Clem’s walls and heal her broken heart?

Summer is here, well in Texas anyway, and beach reads are high on my priority list! If the adorable cover didn't clue in that this is the perfect vacation story, then the synopsis will reel you in. Clem and her family set sail for the summer and she isn't thrilled to be away from her friends. Then again, her friends aren't exactly begging her to stay. Clem made a big mistake and broke the girlfriend code, and now she is in hot water with her BFF. Maybe a 'Summer of Sad Sailing' is what she needs after all.

We jump back with Clem to her Sophomore year when things were awesome and find out what happened to end the school year on a sour note. Back in the present, her parents try to figure out what went wrong and think family time is the only thing Clem needs to bounce back. Clem doesn't feel the same and is content to being holed up in her cabin. When a cutsie ginger - yes, red-headed boy - takes notice of Clem, she does her very best to push him away. Poor guy, he is so sweet and nice, and Clem is constantly building that wall.

Walker makes writing look so easy. The voices are real and the whole thing just works. It's like reading out of a teenagers diary. Unbreak My Heart is an honest look at friendship and love. Great mix of characters, perfect setting, and first love will have you feeling the hot summer sun a little early.
