Lost In Time: Interview with Melissa de la Cruz (+Giveaway)

If you are like me, I loose interest in a series if it goes on for more than 4 books. BUT, there is one series that I have stuck with through the years, the Blue Bloods novels. I'm not a huge paranormal fan, but there is something about these books that I love. The voices are real, the drama and romance is exciting, and the books are a breeze to get through. Pure entertainment!

I have been a fan of Melissa de la Cruz for a long time and last year when she was at the Austin Teen Book Festival, I was a lucky duck to be the moderator at her panel. When I saw she was coming to Dallas, I made my way up and drug a few friends with me. Stacey at Girls in the Stacks and I did a fun interview with Mel in which we quiz her about her books and she dishes on Wolf Pact, the new BB spin-off series - yay!

So, take a listen:

I have to say, I was pretty impressed with Melissa's memory! I thought Stacey and I could trick on a few, but she knew her stuff. Thank you, Mel!

Cover Reveal - Lost In Time by Melissa de la Cruz

Lost In Time by Melissa de la Cruz
October 4th 2011 by Hyperion

From MTV Hollywood Crush:
"Lost In Time" picks up with Schuyler Van Alen and her love Jack Force forced to go their separate ways after their trip to Florence. She must travel to Alexandria to fulfill the Van Alen legacy by searching for Catherine of Siena and the Gate of Promise, while he returns to the Big Apple to face his twin sister (and former bondmate) Mimi. Things get even more complicated when Mimi jets off to Egypt to find her former lover Kingsley Martin, all while the Coven threatens to fall apart around her. Just another day on the Upper East Side, no?

This is one of a few series that I love ALL of the covers. Whether you read the Blue Blood series or not, you have to hand it to the folks at Hyperion...they do a great job! I love the hint of Egypt at the bottom of the picture too....gorgeous!

Quick Reviews - Looking For Alaska, Keys to the Repository, & Bloody Valentine

Looking For Alaska by John Green
October 2008 by Playaway

I really think I should have read this book and not listened to it. It was a little slow at times for me, and the humor was there but a little light. I think the message was special, and the countdown in days to the big event was a good way to transition from chapter to chapter. Miles, the protagonist, was a little dull for a lead role while Alaska was a little bit of everything and oh so interesting. I could easily see plain little Miles falling for her. Hard.

I'll stick to reading Green's books next time...

Keys to the Repository by Melissa de la Cruz
June 29th 2010 by Disney Hyperion

Need to catch up with the Blue Blood series FAST? This is your book. Told in documents from the repository, Keys gives the reader a condensed version of all of the Blue Blood books up to date. A few companion stories give insight into the lives of characters. Think of them as scenes that hit the cutting room floor. A list of characters and a dictionary of terms make this book a handy dandy notebook for fans.

Cover Reveal - Witches of East End by Melissa de la Cruz

Entertainment Weekly just posted the new cover art for Melissa de la Cruz's new book!

From EW:
After tackling vampires and hell hounds, Melissa de la Cruz is ready to get witchy. The author of the popular YA series Blue Bloods is releasing the first book in a new series, this time for adults, called Witches of East End. Centering around the magically inclined Beauchamp family, the series will take place in the same universe as de la Cruz’s previous books, and readers can expect some of her bloodsucking characters to make an appearance. “It’ll be more than a cameo,” de la Cruz told EW. “They are a little more integral to the plot than just coming by and saying, ‘Hi!’ They actually become suspects in the book’s mystery.” Witches of East End hits stores in June.

She has the best luck with cover art! I've asked her before and yes, she does have a say on what goes to print. I hope the same is true for her new adult series. I'm not going to lie, I think this looks a lot like my 12-year-old daughter. This is going high on my TBR pile! What do you guys think?

Waiting on Wednesday

US Version

After reading Misguided Angel, I am so excited for Bloody Valentine! This is number six in the Blue Bloods series by Melissa de la Cruz. This cover is crazy gorgeous! Release date is set for December 28, 2010. This is what Melissa told EW magazine about the new book:

What else do you have coming up?
Wolf Pact is the next one I’ve been working on, it’s a spin off and due for next year. We’re going to have another Blue Bloods book called Bloody Valentine, it will actually detail Allegra and Stephen’s, Schuyler’s human father’s, love story. I was going to put that in Misguided Angel but it got too complicated; I had so many plots and had to move one out.

Misguided Angel Review

From Publisher:
After inheriting the dark Van Alen Legacy, Schuyler fled to Florence with her forbidden love, Jack. Now the two of them must embark on the mission Schuyler was destined to complete: to find and protect the five remaining gates that guard the earth from Lucifer, lord of the Silver Bloods.

Back in New York, Mimi has been elected Regent of a crumbling coven. Struggling with her heartache over the loss of Kingsley and with her overwhelming desire to destroy Jack, she must focus all of her energy on a perilous new threat. Vampires are being abducted and their captors are planning to burn them alive online…for all the world to see. Help arrives in the form of Deming Chen, a Venator from Shanghai, who must untangle the web of deceptions before the killers strike again.

As the young vampires struggle for the survival of the coven, they uncover a deadly secret, a truth first discovered by Schuyler’s mother during the Renaissance but kept buried for centuries. And as the Blue Blood enclave weakens yet further, fate leads Schuyler to a terrible choice that will ultimately map the destiny of her heart.

Review:
*NO spoilers. I scored this book at the Austin Teen Book Festival a few weeks ago where I was (insert brag) lucky enough to moderate the Dastardly Daydreamer panel. If you want to hear about that awesome day, go HERE. Let me preface by saying that I have stuck with the Blue Blood series from the get go. I think it is one of only a few series that I have continued reading all the way through. Usually by book 4 or 5.....I loose interest. Not in this case! I love the characters, and I feel like I can't let them down by not finishing their story. I was roped in by the concept of angels and vampires from the very beginning. Brilliant!

So, let's talk about Misguided Angel. I must say I was a little disappointed that not all of characters make an appearance in this book. The story does pick up where we left off - Jack broke the bond with Mimi and is with Schuyler. The epic battle with the Silver Bloods have left people dead and some in hiding.

Misguided Angel is told in three parts from the perspective of Schuyler, Mimi, and a newcomer - Deming Chen, a Venator from Shanghai. Deming has arrived to solve the gruesome murder of a vampire in the NYC coven.

  • Schuyler and Jack are in Florence trying to find a gate to Hell. Schuyler understands it is her role to protect these gates so that Silver Bloods do not come into this world. They have a huge obstacle in the beginning of the book, but helping hands turn up in mysterious places.

  • Mimi has a huge part, and we really get to know her character. Seems like she may have a soft side.

  • Oliver (Schuyler's conduit) and Mimi find out they have a lot in common, and actually need each other.

  • There is a new threat to vampires besides Silver Bloods. This is the main focus of the book, and where Deming Chen enters.

  • Deming is interesting. I hope she sticks around.

  • We don't hear a peep out of Bliss, or certain others.

  • And of course, we leave off with a bit of a cliff-hanger (that I won't spoil). The next book "should" take Mimi on a mission, but I won't tell you why. You may be able to figure it out by reading my #ATxTBF post last month.

Bottom line....I loved it! This was a super fast read, and I wish the book was longer. I wish that about every good book, especially Melissa's. I am certain die-hard Red Bloods will love Misguided Angel. If you have never read this series, Blue Bloods is the first.

5 out of 5 stars
