The Book Blogger Hop (5)

The Book Blogger Hop is a weekly event hosted by Jennifer at Crazy for Books and runs from Friday to Sunday. The Hop is a fantastic way to get your blog noticed, and visit some other blogs that you didn't know about before. Head over and sign up and see what you can find!

Each week a different question will be added to the hop in order for conversations to occur, and for your followers to get to know you better. Here we go!

"If you find a book that looks interesting but is part of a series,
do you always start with the first title?"

Oh, heck YES! I don't care if I read reviews and people say that the story is okay as a stand alone. If it is part of a series, I start with book number one. When people check out  (or ask about) books from the library that are a part of a series, I always ask if they have read the previous books. Always! Most of the times they are on track, but sometimes kids don't care and they start wherever. Eeeeek. I'm getting all sweaty thinking someone is out there reading a book out of order right now! Zomg!

Follow Friday is hosted by the lovely Rachel at Parajunkee's View. Here is her question:

"What is your usual monthly book budget?"

Uh, I don't have a budget. Austin, TX (where I live) has a great literary community. We have great author events and signings, as well as terrific book festivals. One month I won't go to an event, and the next month there are three I want to attend. I can't budget for that! On the other hand, I believe in the public library! I check out books almost weekly (audio too) - books that I'm not too sure if I will like and books I know my daughters won't read. If there is a book that I know I will love, I will buy it. If an author has a new book out and I own all the others, I will buy it. Sometimes, if I know an author will be coming through town, I will buy it at the signing joint and save that receipt or singing day. I know the drill!

  2. Hi, new follower here.

I am like you and don't have a budget as such. Sometimes there are lots of books I want to buy and sometimes there is none (or at the moment I am on a self imposed book buying ban.)
I wish we had book signings and things near where I live. I was just excited to have a decent bookstore open 30 mins drive from me!

  5. I am an old follower and I am stopping by from Follow Friday.

I have to start a series with the first book, too. I find people who don't absolutely mad. Why would you want to miss part of the story? That is crazy talk. :)

  6. aahh I wish I lived in Austin! I'm not too far though (Houston), but the literary community here just isn't the same.

  8. Thanks for stopping by my blog.

I don't have a book budget either. I try to put myself on one but it doesn't seem to work very well.

  9. Hey! I'm an old follower just stopping by on the hop to wish you a great weekend!

My monthly book budget is $100 and under. I wish I lived closer to a great library so that I could spend less... One of the disadvantages to living in the boonies.

  12. If you're nuts then I'm nuts, too! And really, do I have to whine about how jealous I am that you live in Austin and I don't every time I come visit your blog? Sorry Jen. I'm sure you are tired of hearing it.

Hope you are enjoying all your events this month.

    Happy FF!

  13. Hi Jen! I found you through the blog hop, and I'm now a follower. I'm looking forward to reading your future posts!

Unfortunately, my library doesn't have a lot of YA titles available, so I usually buy my books. I don't really mind, since I'm also a collector and the type of person that reads books more than once, but it does take its toll on my wallet LOL.

    Have a great weekend!

  16. Happy hopping! You know...I don't really set a book budget for myself, but I really should haha I spend FAR too much on books ;)

  17. Of course you are not nuts! I hate that too. Especially when you say something to someone and they said, "oh, well I read spoilers online. So I'm all caught up." Garg!

Oh and I spend way more money on books than I should.... I currently have over 20 books in my possession that I have to read. Yet I am still buying more books! I have banned myself from going to the bookstore until after the holidays, but there are a few books coming out that I NEED, so we'll see how that works out.

  18. You sound as obsessive as me. And I've passed it on to my poor kids. They're so bad that if they started a series with a library book, they have to get them all from the library. But if we bought the first book, they have to own the whole series. My husband doesn't get it, but I agree-- of course we have to buy the rest of the series! We started it!

  19. I can dive right into the middle of a book series if the series' story
    doesn't run chronologically.

That is to say, if each novel in a series is a stand-alone story (like Lee
Child's Reacher novels) then I don't feel the need to start with book one.

On the other hand, a series of books (like Richard Hatch's Battlestar
Galactica novels) can't be read out of sequence since each new book builds
upon the story of the previous entry in the series.

    Happy Book Blogger Hop Friday!

  23. Hopping through and now following you!

I wish my library had half of what yours does. My city is not big enough to host those things. However, I am glad that they host events geared towards kids.

  24. Love all of your responses! I have lived in a lot of places, and Austin is by FAR the best. You all should move here... ;)

  25. I'm a library person too. I could never afford all the audiobooks I listen to. We have a really great library system, thank God.

  26. I live up here in Forth worth, Texas. Yeah we don't get many author signings here. :( I think maybe I should move to austin or SA ya'll always seem to have things down there. The closest they've come to me is dallas. Which I guess isn't to bad. Anyways, I hope you have a good weekend!

  27. Thanks for stopping by Book Love! I don't follow a ton of blogs, but I DEFinitely follow any librarian blogs I find :)

  28. I also must read a series in order, even if the books claims to be okay a as a stand alone, or is a companion novel rather than a sequel. I feel like they were written/published in that order for a reason, and I like for things to unfold the way in which the author intends.

  30. I wish we had that many book festivals here! I think we have two a year and that's it. D: And like you, I have to read a series in order. I hate jumping into a series halfway because there's always something that you've missed. >.< ' Also, I'm a new follower and thank you so much for stopping by my blog! :D

  31. Hey, thanks for stopping by my blog.
Haha, what would we do without the library? I mix between my school and local library depending on stock because sometimes its easier to take them back at school.
It's good that you check if people have read previous books in the series if someone is taking a series book out because sometimes people are unaware of it.

    Happy reading!
