In the After Light by Alexandra Bracken
October 28th, 2014 by Disney Hyperion

Ruby can't look back. Fractured by an unbearable loss, she and the kids who survived the government's attack on Los Angeles travel north to regroup. With them is a prisoner: Clancy Gray, son of the president, and one of the few people Ruby has encountered with abilities like hers. Only Ruby has any power over him, and just one slip could lead to Clancy wreaking havoc on their minds.

They are armed only with a volatile secret: proof of a government conspiracy to cover up the real cause of IAAN, the disease that has killed most of America's children and left Ruby and others like her with powers the government will kill to keep contained. But internal strife may destroy their only chance to free the "rehabilitation camps" housing thousands of other Psi kids.

Meanwhile, reunited with Liam, the boy she would-and did-sacrifice everything for to keep alive, Ruby must face the painful repercussions of having tampered with his memories of her. She turns to Cole, his older brother, to provide the intense training she knows she will need to take down Gray and the government. But Cole has demons of his own, and one fatal mistake may be the spark that sets the world on fire.

  1. These books are really something special. Bracken writes about these characters with such incredible empathy. They are real, they are beautiful, and they are flawed. She's put them in this horrible world that has turned against it's own children, and you feel it, the fear, pain, sorrow, all of it. Then shining through all that darkness and grittiness, are these exquisite bright spots of love and compassion. The Darkest Minds are truly something special, and I wish more people would find that out.

  14. I love everything about the series, the writing style, the characters, and the plot. I immediately fell in love with the characters. They were very relatable. The whole idea in this dystopian society is so interesting. I love dystopian books, so last year when my friend told me about it, I knew I had to get it. It is my favorite trilogy/series of all time. I’m super excited for In the Afterlight to come out!

  20. When I first read The Darkest Minds, I was struck by how real Bracken's characters are. I sympathized with them to the point where I saw them rise from the pages. As an aspiring writer, I am amazed by Bracken's ability to do this. It goes beyond craft, to create something beautiful and yet what makes her characters so real, beautiful and loveable is their flaws. I really hope I can attain this same type of magic that Bracken so easily incorporates in her writing.
